A structural DPM (damp proof membrane) is a method of protecting your structure from damp-related issues due to moisture from the ground rising through a concrete slab via capillary action. The damp proof membrane itself is a thin, sheet material that is typically laid beneath the concrete slab to create a physical barrier between the moisture in the ground and the structural concrete.

If you have an existing concrete slab that is experiencing issues with rising damp or moisture ingress, it may be worth considering a liquid-applied epoxy damp proofing membrane instead.

Requirements for Damp Proof Membranes

Approved Document C: Site preparation and resistance to contaminants and moisture, proposes that a damp proof membrane below the concrete could be formed with a sheet of polyethylene which should be at least 300μm thick (1200 gauge) with sealed joints and laid on a bed of material that will not damage the sheet.

Using a thinner sheet could mean your building doesn't comply with regulations, and would require a costly solution to rectify the issue. It is also possible to obtain structural DPM sheets with a greater thickness than 1200 gauge in circumstances where additional protection is required.

If you're unsure of the required DPM thickness on your project, make sure to check with your architect or structural engineer, or see what is required by your local authority.

DPMs and DPCs

There are numerous different types of damp proof membranes that can and should be used across many areas of construction, particularly where buildings could experience issues with damp.

However, a structural damp proof membrane (DPM) will commonly be laid during the construction of a concrete floor in a new build to protect the floor from rising damp.

Another common type of damp proofing is known as damp proof course (DPC). Damp proof courses do differ in their application however, as they are specifically designed to combat rising damp within structural walls, whereas a DPM is normally used in floors.
