A structural DPM (damp proof membrane) is a method of protecting your structure from damp-related issues due to moisture from the ground rising through a concrete slab via capillary action. The damp proof membrane itself is a thin, sheet material that is typically laid beneath the concrete slab to create a physical barrier between the moisture in the ground and the structural concrete.

If you have an existing concrete slab that is experiencing issues with rising damp or moisture ingress, it may be worth considering a liquid-applied epoxy damp proofing membrane instead.

Requirements for Damp Proof Membranes

Approved Document C: Site preparation and resistance to contaminants and moisture, proposes that a damp proof membrane below the concrete could be formed with a sheet of polyethylene which should be at least 300μm thick (1200 gauge) with sealed joints and laid on a bed of material that will not damage the sheet.

Using a thinner sheet could mean your building doesn't comply with regulations, and would require a costly solution to rectify the issue. It is also possible to obtain structural DPM sheets with a greater thickness than 1200 gauge in circumstances where additional protection is required.
