High quality Formwork Treatments and Release Agents products

When using formwork to create concrete structures, formwork treatments and release agents are different types of coatings that can be applied to the surface of the formwork itself, prior to concreting. The primary function of release agents is to facilitate the easy removal of the formwork or shuttering, preventing the adhesion of the fresh concrete to the formwork surface without affecting the finished surface of the cured concrete.

Other benefits of using the correct release agent include: Reducing the incidence of blowholes and cracks; Delivering the recommended surface finish for the concrete; Reducing the loss of water from the concrete due to absorption into timber formwork; Reducing the leakage of water and moisture from the concrete during the curing process; Protecting the formwork and shuttering components to ensure that they can be reused on future projects.

Common Types of Release Agents

Oil-based release agents with surfactants are general purpose treatments for all types of shuttering including steel formwork. Chemical release agents dry onto the surface of the formwork to leave a thin coating which is water-resistant an compatible with all types of formwork. Cream emulsion release agents cannot be used on steel formwork, but is widely used on other types of shuttering, especially absorbent timber formwork.

Frequently Asked Questions About Formwork Treatments and Release Agents

What is a formwork treatment, and why is it used?

A formwork treatment is a chemical coating applied to formwork (shuttering) surfaces before pouring concrete to improve the quality of concrete finishes and facilitate easy removal of the formwork after curing. It helps prevent adhesion of concrete to the formwork, reducing surface defects and enhancing overall concrete appearance.

How does a formwork treatment work?

Formwork treatments typically contain releasing agents that create a thin, non-stick barrier between the formwork and the concrete. This barrier prevents concrete from bonding to the formwork surface, allowing for easy stripping and minimising surface imperfections.

When should I use a formwork treatment?

Formwork treatments are used before pouring concrete into formwork, especially for complex shapes, intricate designs, or when smooth concrete finishes are desired. They are essential for achieving high-quality concrete surfaces and ensuring easy formwork removal without damage.

What types of formwork treatments are available?

There are various types of formwork treatments available, including form release agents, form oils, form sprays, and formwork coatings. The choice of treatment depends on factors such as the type of formwork material, desired concrete finish, and environmental conditions.

What is a release agent, and why is it used?

A release agent is a substance applied to formwork surfaces to prevent the adhesion of concrete during curing. It allows for easy release of the finished product from the formwork, reducing the risk of surface damage and improving efficiency.

How does a release agent work?

Release agents create a non-stick barrier between the formwork surface and the concrete, preventing bonding and facilitating easy release. They may contain oils, waxes, or synthetic compounds that provide lubrication and minimise friction during demoulding.
